Lizzie Kemp Grayson is a long-time friend of mine, beautiful on the outside and even lovelier on the inside because of Christ in her. After she married Mark, a young man from her native England, they lost their first child at about twelve weeks gestation. Then some years ago they birthed a perfectly healthy son, Josh. Josh, a deeply loved child spreads happiness everywhere he goes. Their third child, Keziah, molded Lizzie and Mark’s lives into a deeper knowledge of God and offers three keys to blessings for us.
Keziah was diagnosed in utero at twenty weeks with Trisomy 18, a condition with an extra chromosome, resulting in multiple birth defects. Hundreds of people around the world prayed for Keziah over the weeks. Even at the last moment Mark and Lizzie hoped God would spare their daughter’s life and heal her. Instead at birth Keziah’s spirit and soul went from Lizzie’s womb directly to heaven. Mark photographed the beautiful infant many times and they cuddled her close until time to let her body go.
Equally as important as the baby, through-out the book Lizzie shares how she coped during the pregnancy. She never denied her despair and grief but demonstrated that praising God gives inner peace and strength in the midst of sorrow. Often Lizzie sang, prayed and recited Bible verses until the peace of God’s presence filled her. Because of her and Mark’s calm attitude, the couple gained respect even from medical personnel who believed the pregnancy should have been aborted.
Lizzie chose, like King David had done, to praise God no matter what. Now she and Mark are also parents of Iona, a healthy, delightful little girl born since Keziah’s death.
This book will bless any reader, not only parents who’ve lost a baby. By following Lizzie and Mark’s example we can find a stronger relationship with God during difficult and painful times in our lives.
